Vasily Demidov’s painting “Tsarina Natalya Kirillovna with Tsarevich Peter on the Red Porch” is dedicated to the historical moment that followed the Sagittaries Riot of 1682: the guilty archers came to the king with repentance, bowing their heads, and the boy with a decisive, royal gesture gives them his forgiveness. After the Streltsky rebellion, Ivan and Peter were married to the kingdom, and the government of the state, in their infancy, became Princess Sophia. The picture of Demidov depicts Queen Natalya Kirillovna, who came out onto the porch of the palace with both kings and clergy. This scene is probably a ritual associated with Peter’s namedays, when he, responding to congratulations of the people, could have mercy on the convicts.
