In 1838, the Chernetsov brothers traveled along the Volga. This was their old dream, because they made the last trip to the native Kostroma province 12 years ago. The beauty of their native places consecrated by the touching memories of childhood strengthened them in their intention at all costs to visit "Blessed Russian river". They created a peculiar encyclopedia of the Volga, which was the center of folk life, where classes, languages, nationality mixed up. A vivid impression on Nikanor Chernetsov was made by the Yuryevets-Petelsky-a small old town, which was founded in 1225 Vladimir Prince Yuri Vsevolodovich. The fortress defended the northeastern borders of the Vladimir-Suzdal principality. At the end of the XVII century, the Yuryevets became a county city of the Kostroma province. Its greatest flowering falls on the second half of the 19th century, when this landscape was written. N. G. Chernetsova was struck by the active development of the city, in which the forestry complex of Brandt factories was created, mechanization was introduced in the forestry, flax -spaced manufactory, dyeing, brewerous, distillery, yeast factories were built. The captured landscape became a visible confirmation of the progressive changes that took place on the Volga and a vivid illustration in the picturesque encyclopedia dedicated to the Great Russian River.
