Under the influence of romantic artistic moods prevailing at the beginning of the 19th century, the artist fruitfully used the traditions of sentimentalism of the late 18th century, based on the cult of nature, natural human feelings. This gave his works a shade of sincere and seriousness, dreamy sadness. The artist himself said that “the best teacher is nature, you need to indulge in her heart, love her with all my heart, and then the person himself is made cleaner, more moral”. It was such a grateful nature – “nature” was found by Tropinin in children. Good and responsive, Tropinin, the first of Russian artists, created so many children’s portraits. He portrayed children with animals, birds, toys, musical instruments.
