The artist is Shishkin
Two years after the end of the Academy of Arts, Shishkin went to Switzerland and Germany as a pensioner, where he continued to improve as a painter. At that time, a popular Swiss landscape painter Alexander Kalam had a strong influence on his work (and many other Russian artists). However, his spectacular mountain landscapes did not impress the native of the endless Prikamsky forests, and in Switzerland Shishkin began to write not mountains and lakes, but forests, separate trees and mountain roads.
The collection of the Russian Museum stores two Shishkin works of 1863 of the same name with the name “Book Forest in Switzerland” (see. also Zh-4122). “Not getting used to the mountainous area, the effects of lighting this region, I was amazed at the first time: I saw a lot of my eye, but for a long time I peered into a new nature for me, not daring to get up to work…”, – Shishkin reported to St. Petersburg about the results of his studies abroad.
