Grandmother and granddaughter

The artist is unknown

Signed m. AND. Mokhov (1819–1903) and the work “Grandmother and granddaughter” dated 1839 is in the Assembly of the GTG. Both paintings are close in size and depict the same scene: an elderly woman sits with knitting in her hands, and next to her – a girl with a book on her knees. Grandmother and girl look at each other, and the clothes, poses and gestures of the characters in both paintings completely coincide. Mokhov’s work was performed more professionally, in the painting of an unknown artist there are errors and inaccuracies. However, it is impossible to call a work from the meeting of the timing of the MIK from the picture of the GTG, since there are significant discrepancies between them. The difference is most noticeable in the portrait of the girl. The knitting differs in size, and chairs are depicted differently on which the model sits. The picture of an unknown artist is the same scene as m. AND. Mokhov, but taken from a different point of view, somewhat to the right. It is known that m. AND. Mokhov was one of the first students of the school of painting and sculpture of MHO and painted his picture during classes in the art class, later transformed into mucos. In all likelihood, the work of an unknown artist from the GRM collection was completed at the same time on the same task, from the same setting by someone from less experienced students. On the left below the signature: in. Perov. 1864, which was later applied. Authorship in. G. Perova is not confirmed by anything.

N. X. Unknown artist. SPb, 2012. With. 225.
