On May 27 (16), 1703, on the lands recently conquered from the Swedes, Peter I ordered to lay a city, which later became called St. Petersburg.

The plot associated with the laying of St. Petersburg was repeatedly used by different artists, drawers and gravegers. The foundation of the new capital of Russia “under the sea” is invariably considered as one of the main events in the history of Peter the Great.
