Artists of the second half of the 19th century, whose work is characterized by the concept of “Russian critical realism”, sought to respond to the most acute social problems of our time. Here, Russian painting diverges from Russian literature, which has not closed in a narrowly social field, but deepened into the subtleties of ethics and psychology of family relations. Painting full of criticism of social vices and compassion for humiliated and offended, saw the “main misfortunes” of families in the hopelessness of poverty and drunkenness, estate prejudices.
