Chumaki in Little Russia

The artist is Aivazovsky

Opened by the artist in the 1850s, the motive of the Chumak convoys, monotonously moving through the vast spaces of the Little Russian steppes, for many decades constantly interested him. Distinguished by a variety of plot situations, this series of paintings reflected stylistic changes in the painting of the master. The canvas of the Russian Museum, the plot close to the early work "Little Russian steppe (Chumaki approaching the tavern)" (1855, the whereabouts are unknown, earlier – the collection of Alexander II), confirms the enthusiasm of contemporaries about the coloristic gift of Aivazovsky – here the painting of snow with blue and pink reflexes anticipates the finds of domestic impressionists.
