Vasily Aleksandrovich Kokorev (April 23 (May 5) 1817, Soligalich-April 22 (May 4) 1889, St. Petersburg)-a national industrialist, a large industrialist, chairman of the board of the Volga-Kama Bank. One of the richest Russian people of the 19th century, an entrepreneur and philanthropist, a famous collector and honorary member of the Academy of Arts (1889). Most of the Kokorevsky Assembly is stored in the timing, GTG and other Russian muses. In 1884, Kokorev near Vyshny Volochka built the so -called academic summer cottage for summer holidays and the work of teachers and students of the Academy of Arts.
The creation of the Kokorev Gallery in Moscow dates back to the beginning of the 1860s. In the architect specially built according to the project and. D. Blueberries of the building, where the halls had the upper light, placed 430 works of painting and 35 sculptures. The Russian part totaled 241 work. The opening took place on January 26, 1862.
Gallery in. AND. Kokoreva in Moscow did not last long, already in the mid-1860s, financial difficulties forced the owner to start negotiations on the sale of the collection. Deciding to part with the gallery, Kokorev sought to maintain the integrity of the collection. A decisive and uncompromising person, he clearly recognized the significance of his meeting. In March 1870, 156 works of the Russian School of Painting were purchased for the collection of the sovereign heir to Tsarevich Alexander Alexandrovich. For the entire collection in. AND. Kokorev paid 40 thousand rubles (much less than it was spent on the purchase of paintings).
The works were originally placed in the Alexander Palace of the Tsarskoye village, later part of them was transferred to Anichkov and Winter Palaces. In 1897, at the organization of the Russian Museum of Emperor Alexander III, 106 first -class painting, which once belonged to the meeting in. AND. Kokoreva, were transferred from Aleksandrovsky and Anichkov palaces to the Russian Museum. Subsequently, other works from the collection that were not purchased in due time for the heir came here. In the 1920-1930s, a significant part of them was issued for permanent storage in different museums of the USSR.
The most significant part of the collection of painting of the Kokorevsky gallery consisted of works to. P. Bryullov. There were 39 in Kokorev’s gallery (!) first -class works of this author, of which 34 were purchased for the heir. Of this number, now there are 29 works in the State Russian Museum. Highly appreciated in. AND. Kokorev Painting and. To. Aivazovsky – 23 works of this master are indicated in the catalog. Kokorev had 15 works p. AT. Basin, among which are sketches, sketches, copies of paintings p. Veronese. Large -scale landscapes a. P. Bogolyubova, n. G. and g. G. Chernetsovs. Work f. AND. Bruni, a. AND. Ivanova belong to the better, created by artists; less famous, but distinguishing themselves by their characteristic manner of painters in. G. Khudyakov, a. AND. Ritzoni were presented in the gallery of their best works.
Most of the works of the Kokorev meeting belong to the period of the 1830-1850s and perfectly characterize the painting of this time. One or more paintings are presented. AND. Fedotov, a. AT. Tyranov, a. G. Venetians, a. E. Egorov, c. And. Sternberg, c. AND. Tropinin, a. G. Varnek, s. F. Shchedrin, m. N. Vorobyov, a. O. Orlovsky, l. F. Lagorio, n. E. Sverchkov, K. AND. Trutovsky.
A hot patriot, a talented and entrepreneurial person with wide nature, Vasily Alexandrovich Kokorev quite justified his nickname “Russian nugget”. On the portrait of work to. To. von Steiben (about 1850) he is represented by a dumb, confident, smoothly shaved businessman in a velvet suit.
The identical subscription and dated 1850 portrait is stored in the Sevastopol Art Museum (122.5 x 100). Copy or repetition (123 x 99) is located in the Abramtsevo Museum.

Kokorev’s activities covered Moscow, St. Petersburg, Central Russia, Ural, Caucasus, Siberia, Persia. Old Believers, a native of the most closed part of the Russian people, he became a pioneer in many branches of entrepreneurship. Kokorev had a sharp practical mind. Moreover, he, as was especially characteristic of merchants from the Old Believers, was distinguished by high decency in business. He not only successfully conducted business, but also proposed to fight abuses in financial transactions on a public scale. He listened to his advice in the office of the Ministry of Finance.
AT. AND. Kokorev was one of the first Russian oil industry. Not limited only to oil production at the Caspian Sea, he founded his own oil refining production.
In 1858, he organized the first oil refinery near Baku, and in 1873 he transformed this enterprise into Baku Oil Society. Largely thanks to Kokorev, Russia by the end of the 19th century gave 51 % of all world oil production. The oil refining enterprise Kokorev was built two years before the machine drilling of wells in the American state of Oklahom began; Vasily Alexandrovich Kokorev was a pioneer in industrial oil refining.
Kokorev in 1857–1858 organized a number of festive banquets-manifestations, at which fiery toasts were pronounced about the need to cancel serfdom, publicity, civil rights. AT. AND. Kokorev published a number of journalistic works in which he gave the analysis of the economic failures of Russia.
For merits to the Academy of Arts (arranging a summer shelter on the Mstea River for students still operating as an “academic summer cottage”) in. AND. Kokorev was awarded the title of Honorary Member of the Academy. The hot patriot of his country, he founded this “Russian Barbison”, wanting to support the poor beginner artists. Being an admirer of creativity to. P. Bryullova, Kokorev, at the same time, believed that Russian nature should more inspire domestic painters, “than the ruins of Pompeii”.
AT. AND. Kokorev was an Old Believer, like many metropolitan and provincial merchants -millionaires – Sapozhnikovs, Sinebryukhov, Morozovs, Guchkovs, Ryabushinsky.
Famous Russian historian, bibliographer Petr Bartenev wrote about in. AND. Kokorev: “In our history, you will not meet another private figure, whose name and affairs would be so popular between millions of the Russian people from St. Petersburg to Siberia and Transcaucasia”.
